COMMUNITY GROUPS

Start making a difference

by Penny Van Nostrand

Two weeks ago in this column, Bob Bucklew made an impassioned plea for people in the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community to get more involved in the political process. Stonewall Cleveland has put a lot of time, effort, and money into creating and launching the SCAN (Stonewall Cleveland Advocacy Network) program, and it appears that we are finding some support. Thank you, to those who have returned profiles. To

The topic for the meeting on the third Monday of the month will be advertised in advance, and will be chosen to fill Stonewall's education goals for 1995. The July 23 meeting will focus on the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and what SCAN can do to insure

those who have yet to complete their profiles, there is still time. We really want to hear from you.

SCAN is not the only project that Stonewall Cleveland is working on. As the new director of the organization, I am happy to say that we have a committed core of individuals who share a passion for civil rights. This group has managed to stick together through the tedious process of scripting a mission statement and setting goals for 1995. With that task behind us, we have hit the ground running and have not looked back.

If you attended a meeting during that period, I am not surprised that you did not return. What I'm suggesting now is that you give Stonewall another chance. We meet on the first and third Monday of every month, from 7:00 to 8:30 at the Cleveland LesbianGay Center. The first meeting of the month is tied to a specific topic and structured to be either an informal discussion group or a more formal presentation with a speaker and 'Q and A session.

passage of this vital legislation. Suggestions will be accepted for future topics that you would like to see addressed.

The first Monday of the month is Stonewall's business meeting. This meeting is open to all Stonewall mem-

bers, and anyone who is interested in serving on one of our nine committees. Committee chairs will present an overview of their activities for the previous month, and put forth ideas for the coming month. Each activity is critiqued so that our performance can be improved for the next outing.

Stonewall previously had a rather loose meeting format. The meetings are now agenda-driven and move at a much faster pace. The meeting's agenda is set by the director, with input from the executive committee. The executive committee is comprised of the nine committee chairs and the director. There are still committee chairs open, as some current chairs are overseeing more than one committee. Stop by a meeting to obtain a list of committee openings.

The second half of 1995 will be very busy for Stonewall with the annual Stonewall dinner, the second annual Candidates' Night, and SCAN. There will be many opportunities to join in. Hopefully, you will find in Stonewall a place to educate yourself on lesbian, gay, and bisexual-related issues, a place to meet new people and make new friends, and a place to take a stand and start making a difference.

Remember, if we don't take control of our future, someone else will.

You can reach Stonewall through our voicemail system at 216-741-9105 or online at Stnwllcle@aol.com.
